우리나라 항공법에서 패러글라이더, 행글라이더, 기구 등을 초경량에 포함시켰다고 말들이 많다. 미국의 초경량협회(USUA) 홈페이지에서 보면 미국도 우리와 마찬가지로 초경량에 포함됨을 알 수 있다. 다른 초경량이나 마찬가지로 항공법 103조 규정에 따른다.
아직까지 미국 항공법에 초경량 관련한 103조가 건재한 것으로 미루어 보아, 초경량에 속하는 어느 것 하나 항공보다는 스포츠에 더 가깝다는 이유를 내세워 항공법에서 빼내자는 사람은 아무도 없는 모양이다.
미국에서는 패러플레인, 트라이크 경우에는 초경량에서부터 스포츠조종사, 자가용조종사 면장까지 있고, 기구의 경우에는 스포츠조종사, 자가용조종사는 물론 사업용조종사 면장까지 있다.
미국의 “스포츠항공기/조종사“는 명칭에서부터 ”스포츠“를 달고 있지만 아무도 ”스포츠“란 이유로 항공법에서 빼자는 사람 없다. 뺄 것 같았으면 처음부터 항공법에서 만들지도 않았을 것이다.

What are ultralights and microlights?
The terms include powered ultralights (fixed wing, rotorcraft, powered parachutes, etc.) and unpowered ultralights (hang gliders, paragliders, sailplanes, balloons, etc.). FAR Part 103 definitions restrict weight, speed, and fuel. The definitions currently apply only to single-seat craft, with exemptions for two-seat craft that are used for instructional purposes only.
